Something I often read is "ie." or "i.e."
It looks like an common abbreviation for "that is to say".
But how do you pronounce it? Do you say it at all or is it something that is only written?

Yep, that's what it means. An example would be "My favorite fast food restaurant, i.e. Popeye', has awesome spicy chicken."
We do use it in spoken English too. You just say the letters "ie" :)
It's very simlar to "e.g." -- they are both from Latin, and can often be interchange. I.e. is technically used to clarify or reword something, and e.g. is used to give an example, but sometimes the usages overlap.
And e.g. is also used out loud in the same way, just say the letters "eg."
