Titre: leaving vs living
Posté par: Freddyben le 24 Juil 2007 18:49
Hello everyone,
I wanted to find out how we can differentiate these two verbs because I reckon they have the same pronunciation but they don't mean the same whatsoever. I had troubles to understand the difference sometimes when I triped through New Zealand because I think the context doesn't help all the time.
An English speaker told me it's more correct to say "live" as "laïve" (french spelling) but they almost never do it anyway.

Thanks in advance.....

Well, I'm not 100% sure how "laïve" would be pronounced, but the difference between these two sounds is an important one in English. You can see the same difference between the words "it" and "eat", as well.

Here, listen to this (http://www.anglaispod.com/forum_stuff/live_leave.mp3), hopefully that will help you hear the difference. I recorded this because that is a very important sound distinction in English, so it's important to be able to hear (and pronounce! :P) correctly.
