It's true we don't know what we've got until its gone,
but we don't know what we've been missing until it arrives.

Hahaha, that's a great question! Yes, swallow your words works, but it's not polite! And shut your mouth, also not polite! :P

some nice ways to say "shut up"...

please be quiet
please quiet down
please lower your voice(s)
"shhh" (audio file) (picture at bottom)

and some not-so-nice ways to say "shut up"...

shut your trap
shut the ____ up (a handful of different swear words fit in the blank)
quiet the ____ down (same situation)
shut your face
shut your piehole

and often times, when you are talking with friends, people tend to make long, complicated ways to say "shut up". for example

You know that noise that keeps coming out of your mouth? Yeah, it'd be great if it would stop...

then of course there are the threatening ways to say shut up, from a parent to a child, or even from a criminal to a victim (perhaps in a movie?)

if I hear one more word out of you...
