Yes, "blushing" is what you should have said ;) You guys made me laugh about the flushing.... :P And you say a "spelling mistake" -- we have the words orthograph and orthography, but nobody would know what you meant :P We just say "spelling" instead. But as for the word order, it will usually be the one without the "of" -- for example, a grammar mistake, not a mistake of grammar.

To answer the question about straightforward, you guys are right. I would say that it also has the meaning of "does not require any explanation." And that's a pretty common thing to say, I use it a lot :) Especially with that "well" there, it sounds very natural!
