I was thinking the other day that it would be nice to have a list of some of the more common abbreviations used anywhere English is spoken. Post some that you know! I'll try to keep a list running in this first post of all the ones that people post so they are easy to look at.
Just for a bit of vocabulary, an abbreviation "stands for" something -- for example, ASAP stands for "as soon as possible."
- AD -- anno domini (used with years, currently it is 2007 AD for example)
- asap -- as soon as possible
- BC -- before Christ (used with years, for example, Julius Caesar died in 44 BC)
- brb -- be right back
- lol -- laughing out loud
- rsvp -- répondez, s'il vous plaît (we use RSVP on invitations to weddings, for example, but I bet most Americans couldn't tell you what it stands for!)
- UK -- United Kingdom
- USA -- United States of America
I'll add more to this list as I think of them, but I'd like to see the ones you guys have encountered, as well!
